What is the Meta Quest 3?

The Meta Quest 3 is Meta’s standalone VR headset, released on 10 October 2023. It runs games and apps on its own, in full colour mixed reality with no PC or console attached. Meta unveiled the device on 1 June 2023 and the headset remains on sale and supported in late 2026.

What does the Meta Quest 3 do?

The Meta Quest 3 plays VR games and runs apps from inside the headset itself. It can also place those scenes in the room around you.

Two cameras show the room in full colour while the software draws virtual objects over the top. That blend of real and virtual is what Meta calls mixed reality and it is what makes the headset different from a screen you watch.

Mixed reality sits in a wider family of terms. How virtual, augmented and mixed reality differ goes through the definitions one by one.

Games and apps run on the headset rather than streaming from another machine. A session starts as soon as the device is on and the controllers are in your hands. The Touch Plus controllers are ringless which brings the grip closer to a natural fist and TruTouch haptics pass touch feedback back through the handle. Four infrared cameras track the headset and the controllers so the room needs no sensors of its own.

What are the Meta Quest 3 specs?

The Meta Quest 3 pairs two LCD panels with custom pancake lenses and a Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 processor. The table lists Meta’s published specifications for the headset.

PartWhat the Meta Quest 3 uses
DisplayTwo LCD panels
Resolution2064 x 2208 pixels per eye
Refresh rate90 to 120 Hz
LensesCustom pancake lenses, optic profile about 40 per cent thinner than the Quest 2’s
ProcessorQualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2
Memory8 GB RAM
CamerasTwo 4-megapixel RGB cameras, four infrared tracking cameras, one infrared depth projector
ControllersTouch Plus, ringless, TruTouch haptics

Pancake lenses bounce light between surfaces inside the shell which shortens the path from panel to eye. Meta puts the optic profile at about 40 per cent thinner than the Quest 2’s.

Each eye gets 2064 x 2208 pixels and the panels refresh between 90 and 120 Hz. A higher refresh rate redraws the scene more often which is what keeps fast movement steady on the screen.

The mixed reality side runs on two 4-megapixel RGB cameras and an infrared depth projector. That pairing reads the shape of a room before the software places anything in it. A virtual object can sit on a real table in the right perspective.

Do you need a PC for a Meta Quest 3?

A PC is not required for the Meta Quest 3. It is a standalone VR headset which means the screens, the lenses, the tracking and the software all live inside the device you put on. A session starts with no computer or console in the room.

Everything a game needs sits in the shell: the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 processor, 8 GB of RAM and the tracking cameras that map the space. Standalone also covers the tracking so the headset reads the room itself instead of relying on cameras mounted around it.

We run our own event sessions on the Pico 4 and that is a different standalone headset. The pattern is the same: the hardware carries the session from the first minute.

How much does the Meta Quest 3 cost?

Meta sets the Meta Quest 3’s price and the figure has moved since the 2023 launch. The 128 GB model was phased out in September 2024. An April 2026 pricing update citing rising memory-chip costs settled the line-up on the 512 GB model. The current figure sits on Meta’s own store listing. The headset ships with its two Touch Plus controllers and games and apps are bought separately.

What is the difference between the Quest 3 and the Quest 3S?

The Quest 3S is the cheaper sibling, released on 15 October 2024. It sits below the Meta Quest 3 on price and on display detail, while keeping the same standalone format.

The gap shows in the screens and the optics. The Quest 3S renders 1832 x 1920 pixels per eye through Fresnel lenses with a 96-degree horizontal field of view. The Quest 3 uses pancake optics and 2064 x 2208 pixels per eye so its picture carries more detail and its lens stack is slimmer.

Fresnel lenses bend light through concentric rings rather than the folded path used in pancake optics. The Quest 3S comes in 128 GB and 256 GB configurations with current figures on Meta’s store listing.

Is the Meta Quest 3 still available in 2026?

The Meta Quest 3 remains on sale and supported in late 2026 and Meta has not announced a Quest 4. It stays in Meta’s current line-up next to the cheaper Quest 3S.

No successor has been announced so the two Quest models remain the pair on sale. Meta VR Glasses, announced in September 2026 for a spring 2027 launch, is a separate product rather than a Quest 4.

Taken as a whole, the Meta Quest 3 is a complete VR system in one device. Screens, lenses, tracking and software sit inside a shell you wear and the room itself folds into the picture when a scene calls for it.

The hardware choice matters less than the session. The headsets we take to events are Pico 4 units. A booking for your venue runs from the headsets and the operator to the collection at the end.
